Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pro rata salary?
A pro rata salary is a salary calculated proportionally based on hours or days worked compared to full-time. For example, if a full-time salary is £40,000 for 5 days/week and you work 3 days/week, your pro rata salary is £24,000.
How is pro rata salary calculated?
Divide your actual hours (or days) by the full-time equivalent, then multiply by the full-time salary. Formula: (actual hours ÷ FTE hours) × FTE salary.
Does pro rata affect holiday entitlement?
Yes. Your statutory holiday entitlement is also calculated pro rata. Part-time workers get 5.6 weeks × their usual working days per week. For 3 days/week, that is 5.6 × 3 = 16.8 days per year.
Is pro rata salary taxed the same way?
Yes. Your pro rata salary is your actual gross income for tax purposes. Income tax, National Insurance, and all other deductions are calculated on your actual earnings — the full-time equivalent salary is irrelevant for tax.
